On Tuesday August 21st, 2018, I fulfilled a long-held dream of swimming from the Fastnet Rock lighthouse off the Coast of West Cork, Ireland, to the tiny fishing village of Crookhaven, near Mizen Head.
It was supposed to be a circa 14/15k swim, max duration of 5 hours. However, the tides didn’t really co-operate with us on the day, so it turned into a 22k, 8hr 27m slugging match.
The added complication was the soupy sea fog which didn’t lift for the entire day – visibility was often 50m. But we finished, mostly thanks to the support and encouragement (threats and abuse) from skipper Donal O’Donavan and pilot Noel Browne from Fastnet Swim team, who did everything they could to help me fulfil my dream.
